How to Keep Your Smartphone Safe
People have been compelled to rely significantly on mobile devices due to fast evolving technology and its portability. Mobile devices carry out a lot of our daily tasks, such as accessing the web, booking appointments, setting up reminders, sharing files, instant messaging, video conferencing, and even mobile banking, thanks to their enhanced functionality.
1. CREATE A PASSCODE :
Snatching your phone is the simplest way for someone to have access to the information on it. Keep an eye on your phone or tablet at all times when you're out in public to lessen the chances of it being stolen by an opportunistic criminal. Set up a passcode, PIN, or fingerprint lock to better secure your smartphone. If you misplace your phone, having a Touch ID feature will function as a deterrent and help protect your personal information.
2. STRICTLY REVIEW YOUR APPLICATIONS :
Apps can assist us in remembering items on our grocery list, planning transportation, and having fun smashing coloured candy pieces. However, before you download a slew of apps, think about their security and what personal information you're giving each one access to. Download software from reputable sources, and uninstall any apps you don't use on a regular basis.
3. WI-FI SHOULD BE AVOIDED :
Cybercriminals may use Wi-Fi to gain access to your mobile device. To be safe, don't connect your device to public or unsecured (non-password protected) Wi-Fi. If you must use public Wi-Fi, take the time to carefully examine the available networks and connect to one that is legal. And never use public Wi-Fi to conduct financial transactions or access sensitive information.
4. STORE YOUR DATA ON A REMOTE SERVER :
It's critical to maintain a solid backup of all the data on your device, whether you lose your phone, drop your tablet in the water, or are a victim of theft. Back up your data to your computer and/or a cloud storage provider. If your gadget falls into the wrong hands, you may be able to remotely wipe all of its data, depending on the device and manufacturer.
5. USE VPN APPLICATIONS :
If you're unsure about the security of the network to which you're connected, you'll need to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) client. A VPN allows you to safely connect to a network. Similarly, all surfing behaviour done on public Wi-Fi will be hidden from inquisitive eyes. It's also beneficial for accessing less secure websites. Anyone who knows how to utilise networking and vulnerability tools can see non-HTTPS sites. MITM (Man-in-the-Middle) attacks are common on these sites, allowing for eavesdropping and password sniffing. When it comes to combatting cybercrime, you need to adopt a new mindset.
5. DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL AN Antivirus Software :
The files and apps you download and instal on your mobile device may include dangerous code. Once activated, this code has the potential to send your data to hackers, leaving you vulnerable and robbing you of your privacy. To avoid this, you should instal a good antivirus programme to ensure your safety.
Some antivirus programmes also include other features, such as wiping your data if you lose your phone, tracking and banning strange callers who may pose a threat, and informing you about which apps are unsafe. They also provide the option of clearing your browsing history and deleting cookies. Cookies are little software tokens that save your login information and may be disclosed if they are accessed by a hostile party.
